In 2021, the federal funding for public transit in the U.S. amounted to almost **** billion U.S. dollars. This represented the highest annual funding from 2016 to 2021 under the FAST Act bill, passed by Congress in the Obama administration and included **** billion U.S. dollars in COVID-19 relief funding. In November 2021, the new Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill was passed with a five-year total authorized budget for public transit of more than *** billion U.S. dollars. Under this new law, the approved funding for U.S. public transportation reached **** billion U.S. dollars in 2022.Â
