Respondents were initially asked whether their local high street was improving or getting worse, thinking about aspects such as quality of shops, cleanliness, safety, community atmosphere and vibe. Respondents who replied that their high street was improving were asked why this was. They could select all that applied.

Generally, consumers in Great Britain were most likely to say that their high street had been improving in 2023 as a result of more shops and services opening up. ** percent of respondents said that their high street improved because the variety of shops had increased. More cafes, restaurants, and bars and more small and independent businesses were also popular reasons.
