In 2022, Chinese chip companies imported almost ** billion U.S. dollars-worth of machines for chip and semiconductor manufacturing. Overall, the Chinese semiconductor industry imported around ** billion U.S. dollars in machinery but exported only around **** billion U.S. dollars in semiconductor equipment. It illustrated that despite increased efforts from the Chinese government to build a domestic chip industry, companies still heavily relied on imported equipment. While the country has made significant improvements in manufacturing capabilities, it still lacks in the semiconductor equipment domain.
