In September 2023, former Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy's initial bill to fund the federal government was rejected by the House of Representatives. In an attempt to stave off a government shutdown, McCarthy proposed a new bipartisan bill, which gained House approval. Nevertheless, several far-right Republican representatives expressed discontent with McCarthy's bipartisan approach, leading to the successful motion to remove him from his position as Speaker of the House on October 3. This was the fist time in U.S. history that the House of Representatives have removed its Speaker.
According to a survey taken shortly after, nearly one quarter of Democratic respondents expressed strong approval for the removal of McCarthy as Speaker of the House, which was only slightly more than Republican respondents. An additional 18 percent of Republicans strongly disapproved with the resolution.
