In the weeks following the ousting of Kevin McCarthy as Speaker of the House of Representatives, there were a number of unsuccessful attempts to elect a new speaker despite several nominations. In order to secure the position, nominees require all 217 Republican votes. On October 25, Louisiana Representative Mike Johnson was elected as the 56th speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. According to a survey taken at the end of October, many Americans still remained unsure regarding how compromise-oriented the new House speaker would be.
