In September 2023, former Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy's initial bill to fund the federal government was rejected by the House of Representatives. In an attempt to stave off a government shutdown, McCarthy proposed a new bipartisan bill, which gained House approval. Nevertheless, several far-right Republican representatives expressed discontent with McCarthy's bipartisan approach, leading to the successful motion to remove him from his position as Speaker of the House on October 3. This was the fist time in U.S. history that the House of Representatives has voted to remove its Speaker.
In the weeks following, there were a number of unsuccessful attempts to elect a new speaker despite several nominations. In order to secure the position, nominees require all 217 Republican votes. On October 25, Louisiana Representative Mike Johnson was elected as the 56th speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. According to a survey taken on October 26, 19 percent of respondents believed the current speaker to be someone who compromises to get things done.
