Respondents were asked if they had ever been told by a doctor or other health professional that they had some form of arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, lupus, or fibromyalgia. Those who answered yes were classified as having an arthritis diagnosis.
FPL is federal poverty level, which is based on the ratio of the family's income in the previous calendar year to the appropriate poverty threshold defined by the U.S. Census Bureau.

In 2023, around 24 percent of adults in the United States with a family income less than 100 percent of the federal poverty level (FPL) had doctor-diagnosed arthritis in some form, compared to 20 percent of those from households with 200 percent of the FPL or higher.
