It is estimated that over 53 million adults in the United States have been diagnosed with arthritis, making it one of the most common health conditions in the country. Arthritis often refers to many different conditions that affect the joints with some of the most common being osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout. The number of people affected by arthritis is expected to increase in the future as the share of the elderly population rises. As there is no cure for arthritis prevention will be vital to decrease the burden of these conditions. There are known modifiable risk factors for arthritis and avoiding them can help prevent or delay onset and reduce pain and improve mobility in those already suffering. Common arthritis treatments include over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medicine, corticosteroids, physical therapy, and in severe cases, surgery.
