The source defines crypto asset as "a new type of asset recorded in digital form and enabled by the use of cryptography that is not and does not represent a financial claim on, or a liability of, any identifiable entity (...). The emergence of crypto-assets has been facilitated by distributed ledger technology (DLT). However, their distinctive feature is the lack of an underlying claim, which makes them highly volatile and speculative."
*The survey was carried out in two rounds. The sample share of the first survey round was set to 45%, and the share of the second round to 55%.

In 2024, only 12 percent of the survey respondents in Portugal owned crypto assets. Of those who did, 63 percent used crypto assets for investment purposes, 15 percent for payment purposes, and 22 percent for both uses.
