This leads couples who cannot meet religious requirements for matrimony, such as interfaith couples, to seek marriages abroad. Furthermore, many couples who do not wish to be married under religious institutions, also travel overseas for secular marriages.

According to a recent report, in 2022, 39 percent of marriages abroad between Jewish individuals and non-Jews who are neither Muslim nor Christian, took place in Cyprus. The second most common destinations for these foreign weddings, were the countries of the former Soviet Union, hosting 33 percent of ceremonies.
