Marriage laws in Israel do not permit civil marriages within the country. This leads couples who cannot meet religious requirements for matrimony, such as interfaith couples, to seek marriages abroad. Furthermore, many couples who do not wish to be married under religious institutions, also travel overseas for secular marriages.

According to a recent report, in 2022, ** percent of marriages abroad between Jewish individuals and persons of an unknown religion, took place in former Soviet Union countries. The second most common destination for these foreign weddings, was the United States, hosting ** percent of ceremonies.
