*The number of responses includes 591 respondents in the three metropolitan areas Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya who received and returned questionnaires in person and 425 responses via postal questionnaire in all other regions. As the source does not report the exact number of those who have bought an apartment, the number of respondents refers to those who have bought a pre-owned home, including detached houses.

Affordability was the leading reason for buying a second-hand home in Japan, a survey conducted between September and November 2022 found. Over ** percent of households that bought pre-owned apartments in the fiscal year 2021 did so because it fit within their budget. At the same time, around **** percent stated that they did not attach importance to buying a new home.
