As of 2021, natural gas was Africa's leading electricity source. Moreover, when removing South Africa and Egypt from the equation, natural gas remained the main source of electricity generation, with around ** percent. However, electricity coming from hydroelectric sources overtook coal as the second source, jumping from ** percent to ** percent, while coal dropping from ** percent to nine percent. This can be connected to South Africa's huge dependence on coal for electricity generation.
