In 2023, the number of refugees residing in Uruguay increased by 170 refugees (+15.25 percent) compared to 2022. With 1,285 refugees, the number of refugees residing thereby reached its highest value in the observed period. Refugee population includes people who are outside of their country of origin for reasons of feared persecution, conflict, generalized violence, or other circumstances that have seriously disturbed public order and, therefore, require international protection. Country or territory of asylum is the country or territory where an asylum claim was filed and granted.
