To meet the Paris climate targets and limit global warming to ***°C, Germany must drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. A model calculation by the Climate Action Tracker project, involving the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, suggests that emissions should not exceed million tons of CO2 equivalents by 2030. However, the German government’s current plans aim for a *** reduction in emissions by 2030 compared to 1990 levels, allowing for a maximum of *** million tons of CO2 equivalents. Furthermore, the Climate Protection Act sets an ambitious goal for Germany to achieve net greenhouse gas neutrality by 2045.
