Since 2020, the number of reported executions worldwide increased, reaching over 1,000 in 2023 for the first time since 2016, and peaking in 2024 at 1,518. However, the number is likely to be higher as several countries do not report the actual number of people executed, and the figure does not include what is projected to be more than 1,000 executions in China in 2024. That year, Iran was the country that executed the highest number of people.
