In 2023, operator Pennsylvania-New Jersey-Maryland Interconnection (PJM) accounted for the largest capacity retirements in the United States, at almost gigawatts. PJM operates on the eastern coast of the U.S., while the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) transmits electricity in the Midwest United States and some Southern states. 
Natural gas accounted for the largest share of the power capacity retirements in the U.S. that year.
