* Microgrid is defined as a group of interconnected loads and distributed energy resources (DERs) that can disconnect and re-connect to the utility grid as a single entity, allowing facilities to remain operational during utility outages.

Texas was the leading state in the U.S. based on microgrid penetration capacity, with *** megawatts deployed in 2020. At that same time, New York ranked second, with *** megawatts. By comparison, there was ** megawatts deployed in Arizona.
Microgrids operate in connection to traditional centralized grids but are able to disconnect and operate autonomously. In the future, microgrid technologies are expected to become more prevalent in public sectors.
