The electrification of the energy system is a crucial point of the clean energy transition in the European Union. The installed electricity capacity in European countries amounted to roughly gigawatts in 2020, but scenarios that investigate decarbonization pathways show that this figure has to grow remarkably by 2040. The Fit for 55 (FF55) and REPowerEU scenarios forecast an installed power capacity of and gigawatts by that year to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. By comparison, Radical Action indicates that gigawatts of electricity capacity should be installed in the EU by 2040 to achieve carbon neutrality by that year.
