Mergers and acquisitions in the gaming industry are often worth billions and create lots of buzz. The biggest announced video gaming M&A deal of 2025 was the controversial acquisition of Electronic Arts (EA) by PIF, Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners in September, in a deal worth a staggering 55 billion U.S. dollars.
However, the value of 2025 gaming M&A deals still pale in comparison to the blockbuster year of 2022 — in January 2022, the two biggest gaming acquisitions ever happened within barely a week of each other - on January 10, Take-Two Interactive announced its purchase of social gaming company Zynga, signaling a stronger focus on mobile gaming. January 18, 2022, saw the surprise notice of Microsoft acquiring Activision Blizzard for close to 69 billion U.S. dollars.
