The Spanish charging network

Catalonia and Andalusia were the autonomous communities boasting the largest inter-urban public electric vehicle charging network in Spain, while Madrid, a highly urban autonomous community, ranked fourth. The Spanish charging network's heavier reliance on urban charging is one of the many opportunities for growth faced by the sector. Most public chargers in Spain were also alternating current charging points, which are typically slower to charge an electric vehicle compared to their direct current counterparts.

The Spanish EV market

The Spanish plug-in electric vehicle market has expanded since 2014. In 2022, around * battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) and *plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) were sold in the country. PHEV sales overtook BEVs in 2020, which contrasts with the European trend. Under ten percent of new passenger car sales in Spain in 2022 were plug-in electric vehicles, including nearly four percent of BEVs. Comparatively, around percent of car sales in the European Union were all-electric vehicles, with under *** percent of PHEVs.
