5G is central to digital transformation

5G mobile technology is considered a core digital transformation priority for Europe. By delivering improved bandwidth and ultra-low latency, 5G networks unlock a range of technologies across both commercial and industrial sectors, from smart factories to advanced AI applications. The EU has therefore linked the rollout of 5G, along with fiber broadband, as central to economic growth in the bloc. Under its Digital Decade policy, the EU targets 5G coverage in all urban areas and major transport routes by 2025 but is on track to miss this goal.

5G quality under scrutiny

With 5G coverage expanding across the globe, attention has increasingly turned to the quality of 5G networks on offer. This is particularly true in rural areas, where coverage may exist in name, but service quality often lags, with slower speeds and higher latency compared to urban networks. The focus is now on the development of 5G Standalone (SA) networks, which provide lower latency, greater reliability, and higher capacity than earlier Non-Standalone (NSA) deployments. However, with no EU-wide targets for 5G SA, the rollout of this advanced infrastructure is left to member states, causing significant disparities in service quality and availability across Europe.
