Corruption within the European Union is one of the key issues that impedes European integration and has resulted in the erosion of trust in some EU member states, notably in Central & Eastern Europe. In 2024, Czechia, Slovakia, and Romania were the three member states with the highest share of their citizens reporting that corruption was either accepted or tolerated in their home countries, with around two-thirds of their citizens holding this view.Â
In these countries, citizens reported that if they were seeking something from the public authorities, it would be acceptable for them to offer money, a gift, or a favor to expedite the process.Â
