Mexico's CO₂ emissions have risen by almost ** percent since the turn of the century. Human activities – primarily the burning of fossil fuels – have led to a high concentration of CO₂ in the atmosphere, contributing to an increase in the planet’s average temperature. 

Mexico's contributions to global COâ‚‚ emisisons

Mexico is one of the largest CO₂ emitters in the world, ranking among the top 15 polluters in recent years. It is also one of the biggest historical emitters, having produced more than ** GtCO₂ from fossil fuel combustion since the Industrial Revolution began. Nevertheless, Mexico's contributions to historical emissions pales in comparison to countries such as China and neighboring United States.

Methane emissions in Mexico

Along with COâ‚‚, nitrous oxide, fluorinated gases, and methane are the main GHGs. Methane is the second most abundant GHG emitted in Mexico, with the country releasing *** ²Ñ³Ù°ä°¿â‚‚e methane emissions in 2023. Methane’s primary sources are landfills, oil and gas systems, and agricultural activities. While methane remains in the atmosphere for less time than COâ‚‚, it has a far greater global warming potential.
