As of 2025, 2009 was the most intense year regarding restrictions and internet censorship. The first was in February of that year when the government of Oman banned VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol). In 2020, the country's Telecom Regulatory Authority (TRA) lifted the ban, yet WhatsApp Calling remains blocked. In May and June, restrictions were carried out in Iran, including the blockage of Facebook and YouTube and cutting the leading mobile network in the capital Tehran. Additionally, in July 2009, social networks Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube were blocked in China and remain blocked as of February 2024. Lastly, among the longest-lasting internet restrictions was the YouTube ban in Turkmenistan in December 2009.
