As of late 2022, most of the buildings certified by Energy Star in the United States were constructed in 1977. Over *** million square feet worth of multifamily homes and commercial buildings were built in the year 2000. Very few buildings with an energy efficiency certificate were constructed before the turn of the **** century. Meanwhile, the federal program Energy Star has awarded more certificates in 2021 and 2022 than in any other year.
