According to a survey on biodiversity conducted in mid-2022 in Japan, the majority of more than ** percent of respondents stated to have heard the term biodiversity before but never learned what it actually meant. More than ** percent of respondents claimed to be sufficiently educated on the subject, while a similar amount seemed to be completely unaware of the topic.
Biodiversity refers to the number and variety of individual species of plants, animals and other organisms that are living within a specific region. Biodiversity is one major goal of environmental protection efforts, as it is almost universally regarded as beneficial to human life. Most threats to biodiversity are caused by humans encroaching on previously uncultivated natural land, either by direct development or indirect effects like pollution. However, invasive species and natural disasters have also diminished biodiversity significantly throughout history.
