The implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) was expected to reduce extreme poverty in Africa. Across Central, Eastern, Western, and Southern Africa, millions of people are forecast to be affected by this reduction. For instance, in Western Africa, over ** million people living in extreme poverty would be relieved in 2035 due to AfCFTA initiatives, rising from around *** million and **** million people in 2025 and 2030, respectively.
In May 2019, the AfCFTA agreement officially entered into force after ** African countries had ratified it. The agreement sought to boost inter-regional trade.
