In 2024, the most common active ingredients in terms of consumption among class C generic drugs in Italy were those related to tranquilizers. As a matter of fact, lorazepam, alprazolam, and lormetazepam were the three most consumed active ingredients in the country, with market shares of 22 percent, 13 percent, and 8 percent, respectively. These three benzodiazepine medications led the ranking of generic drugs which cost is not covered by the Italian National Healthcare Service.
