By April 2022, *** local governments in Japan implemented a same-sex partnership system. The number of municipalities allowing civil unions doubled compared to the previous year. At the same time, the number of registered couples increased from around *** to *** thousand. Japan does not allow same-sex marriage. Local governments, instead, introduced same-sex partnership systems that grant certain rights to registered couples.
