As of 2016, over half of the Amazon forest's carbon stock was on indigenous lands, protected natural areas, or in lands where these overlap. Nine countries share the Amazon rainforest, with the largest portion located in Brazil, followed by Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, and Ecuador.
