The presence of forests on French territory is not heterogeneous. The urbanization of a territory naturally reduces the space for wooded areas. The ÃŽle-de-France region, which is highly urbanized, was one of the least wooded regions in France with ** percent in 2021.
However, it were mostly the regions in the North-West, with Normandy, Brittany and the Pays-de-la-Loire that had the least wooded areas. These regions were also the granaries of France, where agricultural land occupied the largest part of the surface area.
In metropolitan France, Corsica and the Provence-Alpes-Côtes d'Azur region had the most forestation with almost of the island of beauty covered.
French Guyana, an overseas department, was the most wooded region in France with more than ** percent of its territory covered by forests and Amazon jungle.
