The basic food basket (canasta básica alimentaria) is the group of foodstuffs and beverages that satisfies nutritional needs (both kilocalorie and protein requirements), and whose composition reflects the consumption habits of a reference population, that is, a group of households that covers with their consumption said
food needs.
The value of this basket is used in Argentina as a reference point to establish the indigence line, also known as the extreme poverty line. This line gauges if households have enough income to cover a basic basket of foodstuff able to meet a minimum threshold of caloric and protein ncesities.
The basic consumer basket (canasta básica total, literally translated as total basic basket) expands the basic food basket by adding goods and non-food services such as clothing, transportation, education, health, housing, etc. It is used as the reference point to establish the poverty line.
