In a survey conducted in Japan from *** to **, around **** percent of male and **** percent of female respondents were in favor of introducing a dual system that allows married couples to choose between sharing the same surname or keeping separate surnames. A higher share of men was in favor of maintaining the current system under which married couples have to share the same surname.
