U.S. individuals receiving pre-trial release FY 2017/18, by citizenship
For the fiscal year of 2018, most people in the United States federal criminal justice system did not receive pre-trial release from prison. A significant majority of the total number of undocumented non-U.S. citizen detainees did not receive pre-trial release. About half of detained U.S. citizens were granted pre-trial release at either an initial hearing, or a hearing at a later date.
When an individual is granted pre-trial release, they are released from detention while awaiting trial, which is usually accompanied by court mandated stipulations such as bond or electronic monitoring.
