Russia accounted for nearly one quarter of the total value of natural gas in gaseous state imported into the European Union (EU) from outside the organization in 2022, down from 45 percent in the previous year. Due to the sanctions on Russia over the invasion of Ukraine, energy imports from Russia into the EU decreased in 2022.
