Supplementary notes
In 2022, the source stated it made two changes to the categories used in previous years. These include a combination of "credit cards" with "charge/deferred debit cards" and the split of BNPL from "POS financing" (which itself was added as a new category in 2020). The latter change was made to atone for the "growing importance of BNPL". This seems to have been reverted in 2023 - for the year 2022.
In 2024, the "debit card" and "prepaid card" categories were combined into a single category called "Debit and Prepaid Cards".
The figures have been taken from several publications. No figures were available for 2018 as the source did not release any reports that year.

Most used in-store (POS) payment methods in Nigeria 2017-2025, with 2030 forecast
Cash still made up the vast majority of Nigerian POS payments since COVID-19, despite a significant decline in market share. Banknotes and paper money accounted for nearly ** out of 100 paid-for transactions in physical stores in 2025, as the source predicts cash will likely remain one of the main in-store payment methods up to 2030 together with account-to-account transaction. The use of mobile wallets in a physical environment did increase since 2020, likely spurred by the forecasted user growth of Nigeria's Paga app. This wallet is widely regarded as the country's biggest fintech, as it was responsible for over ***** U.S. dollars of transactions in 2020.
