Installations of scrubbing systems on ships picked up pace in the second half of 2019 and peaked in January 2020, when ships with a combined capacity of around **** million dead-weight tons were fitted with scrubbers worldwide. This was due to the implementation of the IMO's sulfur cap in January 2020. Vessel scrubbers are employed to remove nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur oxides (SOx), and other air pollutants from exhaust gases generated by engines.
