Of the 1.84 trillion U.S. dollars of assets held by Islamic banks in 2020, almost one trillion were located in Gulf Cooperation Council countries. The Middle East and South Asia accounted for another half a trillion U.S. dollars in assets, almost double the amount held by South East Asian countries. However, regional sukuk issuance was highest in South East Asia, somewhat offsetting this difference.
