Islamic banking industry in Egypt - statistics & facts
Although Egypt, one of Africa’s largest economies, has a well-established financial sector, yet, Islamic banking remains a relatively small segment of the industry. As of 2024, sharia-compliant banking accounted for only 5.2 percent of the overall banking sector's market share. Despite Egypt’s large Muslim population, Islamic banking adoption has been slow, largely due to historical reliance on traditional banking models, limited consumer awareness, and a competitive landscape dominated by conventional banks. However, growing interest in Sharia-compliant financial products, combined with regulatory efforts and the rise of fintech, signals a shifting trajectory for the industry.
