As of 2025, approximately  people were members of a crime syndicate, while another were associate members. While the number of associate members experienced a surge and peaked at about * in 2007, the number of proper members remained on its general downward course, and both declined significantly in the subsequent years. Japanese transnational criminal organizations and their members are widely known as yakuza.
