This statistic reflects the important role played by the public sector when it comes to enforcing a fairer distribution of income among the Spanish population. The lower-income group (half of the population earning the lowest income) only received 16.4 percent of total wage incomes before public sector transfers in Spain as of August 2020. This figure increased by nearly seven points after the public sector transfers. Before the intervention of the public sector, the most affluent ten percent of the Spanish population received 32.2 percent of all wage incomes in the same time.
