People living in urbans areas were twice as likely to have sewer connections than on-site sanitation facilities in 2022. Meanwhile, on-site systems such as septic tanks and latrines were far more common in rural areas. Only a small share of developed regions use on-site systems, with most of the populations connected to sewer networks. On-site facilities are far more likely to be used in developing regions such as Sub-Saharan Africa and Central and Southern Asia, where waste management infrastructures are lacking.
