The proportion of the world's population using on-site sanitation systems and sewer connections varies greatly by region. In 2022, more than ** percent of the populations of Europe and Northern America, and Australia and New Zealand had sewer connections. In comparison, just percent of the population of Sub-Saharan Africa had access to these services. On-site sanitation systems were far more common in developing regions, with ** percent of the Central and Southern Asian population using septic tanks and improved latrines.
