Brazil and the EU were the only G20 countries to reduce subsidies for fossil fuels between 2018 and 2022. During the same period, Japan and Italy saw the highest growth, at more than 250 percent. On a per capita basis, Saudi Arabia had by far the highest fossil fuel support in 2022.
