The Road Transport Vehicle Law defines light motor vehicles (LMVs) built since October 2008 as three- or four-wheeled automobiles with an engine displacement of 660cc or smaller not exceeding 3.4m in length, 2m in height, and 1.48m in width. Older vehicles follow slightly different regulations concerning displacement and size.
As of March 31, 2025, around million light motor passenger cars (kei cars) were in use in Japan, increasing compared to the previous year. The values were on an upward trend during the past decade.
