The figures consider convicted individuals, those committed for civil debt, and remand prisoners. Unconvicted individuals constituted the largest amount of prisoners in Kenya. According to the source, the decline in the total prison population was attributed to sentence reviews of offenders serving death sentences and life imprisonment. Also, the government reviewed cases of remandees to alternative non-custodial sentencing due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
