As of 2020, slightly over ** percent of the respondent firms in Egypt indicated to have paid a bribe to get a construction permit. This was higher than both the share for businesses in the Middle East and North Africa and the world average, which were set at **** percent and **** percent, respectively. Moreover, the proportion of businesses indicating that they need to gift officials was low in all other criteria, with **** percent of them reporting expectations to gift public officials in order to get things done. Overall, corruption ranked third in the business environment obstacles ranking for firms.
