The highest figure has been recorded in 2013, when Pope Francis was elected after the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, probably highlighting strong expectations for the renovation of the institution coming with the new leader. Nevertheless, in the following years, the people's trust settled back to around ** percent. By contrast, Italians share a much higher confidence in Pope Francis than in the Church, as in 2022 almost ** percent of the citizens declared to trust him.
