QR codes were used more in Europe than in Latin America in 2020, but the LATAM region is expected to have overtaken Europe markedly in 2025. However, forecasts predict that the Americas - including North America - will not come close to the * U.S. dollar market size of QR transactions in the Far East & China. The use of black box patterns for payments was not a common practice in either the United States or the United Kingdom (UK), as a 2020 survey found a clear minority of QR code users in both countries. This particular survey did not mention why it was the case - whether, for instance, people had security issues with QR or not - but it did provide information on where these payments were used: Typically, restaurants or bars were a preferred location for these types of mobile payments in the U.S. or UK.
